Disability Tax Credit

The disability tax credit is a non-refundable reduction in the amount an individual with a physical or mental disability claims when taxes are filed. Due to the non-refundable nature of the credit, an individual pays less in taxes but will not get any money back.

Are you eligible?

Qualifying for the credit requires the applicant to answer ‘yes’ to both the following questions:

  1. Do you have a mental or physical disability that is expected to last, or has lasted, one year or more?
  2. Are you either blind, in need of extensive therapy or treatment, or limited in activities that people need to do regularly (speaking, hearing, walking, using the bathroom, eating, getting dressed, remembering, banking, finding your way around, dealing with emergencies)?
