Bob Dhaliwal Elected to CSCU's Board of Directors

February 24, 2020

Community Savings Credit Union is very pleased to announce that Bob Dhaliwal has been elected to the Community Savings Credit Union Board of Directors.

Community Savings Credit Union is a full-service financial institution with a strong focus on providing financial services to the working community. The majority of the Community Savings’ Board of Directors are known leaders within the labour movement, and each board member is an advocate for hard-working people who strive to create a secure life for their families. The Board works together with a common vision for the future of the credit union and the working community.

“Given the history of Community Savings and the role that ILWU members played when the ILWU Credit Union merged with CSCU, having Bob on our Board underscores the importance of that history. Just as important, Bob brings great skills to our Board as well as a strong connection to BC’s labour movement,” said Phil Legg, Chair of the Board of Community Savings.

Bob Dhaliwal is currently serving his third 2-year term as Secretary Treasurer of ILWU Canada. Bob began his Longshore career with ILWU Local 502, New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada, in 1988. Shortly after that, he left the industry to continue his studies and completed his commercial pilot’s license and his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Simon Fraser University. After returning to the industry in 2002, Bob worked in all phases of stevedoring, including steel, lumber, logs, automobiles and the movement of containerized cargo. He is also currently serving as the lead trustee of the Longshore pension and benefit plans.

Community Savings’ pro-union values started 75 years ago with its roots as the International Woodworkers of America (New Westminster) Credit Union. In 1976, the Longshoreman’s and Warehousemen Union Credit Union merged with the IWA Credit Union to form a stronger and like minded credit union for the working community. Bob Dhaliwal’s appointment to the CSCU Board of Directors speaks to the credit union’s strong union past, and it’s enduring relationship with the BC labour movement.
